Happy New Year from Lake TJ Academy!
Reflecting on Our Homeschool Journey & Looking Ahead to 2025
Hey there, friends! As we step into 2025, it feels like the perfect time to reflect on our journey so far and share some exciting plans for the year ahead. Grab your favorite drink, get comfy, and let’s dive into what’s been working, what’s changed, and what’s next for our homeschooling adventure!
1. What’s Been Working
Looking back, I can’t believe how much we’ve grown! The routines we’ve established, particularly our anchor system, have provided much-needed structure while allowing room for flexibility. This system helps the boys know exactly what to expect throughout the day and the week, which has been such a relief for all of us. They thrive on having a clear sense of what’s next, and it keeps us on track. Flexibility, however, has been key too! If a lesson isn’t quite clicking, we simply pivot. Hands-on learning has been a game-changer—whether it’s building something from scratch or diving into creative experiments, the boys are fully engaged, and it’s been such a joy to see their curiosity flourish.
2. What’s Changed
At the start, I’ll admit—I was overwhelmed. Despite all the research I did before making the switch to homeschooling, I didn’t fully grasp how much time and adjustment it would take. I had a lot of unrealistic expectations, and the weight of trying to do everything perfectly added stress to the journey. But over time, I’ve learned to let go of perfection. We’ve found our rhythm, and our curriculum has evolved to be much more personalized to the boys’ interests and needs. It feels much more organic and aligned with where they’re at in their learning.
3. Plans for 2025
As we head into the next phase of this journey, I’m filled with excitement for what’s to come. Personally, one of my biggest goals for 2025 is to prioritize self-care. Homeschooling, blogging, and family life can feel like a balancing act, and I’ve realized that in order to truly thrive in all these areas, I need to take care of myself first. I’m adjusting my morning routine to ensure I’m setting a positive tone for the day, and I’m making time for personal interests and self-care. I’ve already been blessed with my mom’s help once a week, allowing me to attend a much-needed yoga class, and my husband makes sure I get some downtime on the weekends. This recharge time is crucial for my well-being and for creating a more purposeful and joyful homeschooling experience for my family.
In terms of our homeschooling, I’m really excited to incorporate more hands-on activities and outdoor learning experiences into our routine. We’ve already done a lot of nature walks and outings, but this year, I want to deepen that connection to the outdoors with more local hiking adventures. The boys are also showing a growing interest in cooking, and I can’t wait to involve them in the kitchen more. Not only will they be learning life skills, but it’s a wonderful opportunity for experiential learning, which I believe sparks curiosity and growth in such a meaningful way.
4. Lessons Learned & Growth
Reflecting on everything so far, I’ve learned to embrace the messiness of homeschooling. Things don’t always go according to plan, and that’s okay! If a lesson becomes frustrating, we take a break and revisit it later with fresh minds. I’ve also learned to slow down and include the boys more in day-to-day tasks, even though it can take longer. They’re becoming great helpers, and I know these moments will teach them invaluable life skills—patience, responsibility, and teamwork.
One thing I’m especially proud of is how the boys have become more independent in their learning. They’re not just learning subjects—they’re becoming more confident, engaged, and curious individuals. Their interests have evolved, and I’m seeing them take a greater interest in practical things, like cooking, soccer, and other real-life skills. These interests have influenced the activities and curriculum I choose, and I’m excited to keep nurturing their passions in the year ahead.
5. Looking Ahead
As we move into 2025, I’m excited about the growth, balance, and connection we will continue to nurture in our homeschooling journey. This year, I’m focusing on expanding our learning experiences—more hands-on projects, more outdoor adventures, and more opportunities to learn through real-world experiences. I also have big plans to create digital resources that will help homeschoolers at every stage of their journey. Whether you’re just starting out or have been homeschooling for years, I hope to provide you with practical, meaningful tools that will support your journey.
Finally, community is so important to me. I’m looking forward to deepening the friendships we’ve made in our local co-op and helping my boys expand their social circles. Homeschooling doesn’t just take a village—it thrives in one, and I’m so grateful for the wonderful connections we’ve made and will continue to foster in 2025.
Reflecting on all of this reminds me of how far we’ve come and how much potential lies ahead. I’m grateful for the flexibility, joy, and growth homeschooling has brought into our lives, and I’m excited for what’s to come in the new year. Here’s to a year full of learning, love, balance, and self-care!
Happy New Year!
